Obituary for Helen Slater
Mrs. Helen Slater, 86, of New Canton, Illinois, passed away at 5:52 a.m. Tuesday, November 10, 2015, at the Barry Community Care Center in Barry. She was born March 4, 1929, in New Canton, Illinois, to Eldon & Lula (Campbell) Johnston. They preceded her in death. She married Clifford Wallace Slater in 1946, in Quincy, Illinois. He preceded her in death on June 21, 1985. She is survived by 2 sons - Larry Slater & his wife Jane of St. Louis, Missouri and Terry Slater of Junction City, California, and 1 daughter, Tammy Slater of Kimmell, Indiana. She is also survived by 2 sisters - Doris Wallace of New Canton, Illinois and Emma Rae Gerecke of Meredosia, Illinois, and 1 brother, Francis Johnston, of Roscoe, Illinois. In addition to her parents and her husband she was preceded in death by 5 brothers, Jack, Joe, Paul, Roy and Junior Johnston and 3 sons, Michael as an infant, Donald Dewey Slater and Jeffery W. Slater. Helen was a devout Christian who worked for many years as a nursing assistant. She was well known for her cake baking and decorating. She also loved quilting in her spare time. There is no visitation. Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 21, 2015, at Shearer Cemetery in New Canton. Burial is in Shearer Cemeter, New Canton, Illinois. Memorials are suggested to Thrive Saint Louis. Kirgan Funeral Home in Barry in charge of arrangements.
