Obituary for Jacob Henry Syrcle, Jr.
Mr. Jacob Henry Syrcle Jr., 98, of Barry, passed away at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, March 12, 2016, at the Barry Community Care Center in Barry.
Junior was born April 29, 1917, in Griggsville, Illinois, the youngest of 11 children born to Jacob Henry and Cinda Harelson Syrcle.
He married Mildred Taylor on March 3, 1940. Following her death in 1976 he married Carol "Kelly" McNeill Hazelrigg on December 31, 1978. She survives in Barry along with his sons, Reginald "Reggie" (Susan) Syrcle of Valparaiso, Indiana, and Richard (Linda) Syrcle of Barry; stepsons Wayne (Debby) Hazelrigg of Barry, Chuck (Paula) Hazelrigg of Plainville and Rick (Rhonda) Hazelrigg of Fishook; ad stepdaughter Nedla Hazelrigg Liggett of Quincy.
Also surviving are three grandchildren, Allison Syrcle Bush of Bourbonnais, Illinois, Jason (Jennifer) Syrcle of Starkville, Mississippi, and Stacy (Steve) Syrcle Amraen of Woodstock, Illinois; and nine step grandchildren, Charlie (Joni) Hazelrigg of Payson, Mathew (Maggie) Hazelrigg of Liberty, Whitney (Jon) Brandenburg of Springfiled, Mariah Liggett of Payson and Zach Liggett of Quincy, Amanda Brown of Quincy, Travis Brown of Griggsville, Ryan Brown of Fishook and Robert (Deanna) Ervin of Barry. He also is survived by five great grandchildren: Adam, Abigail, Paige and Andrew Bush of Bourbonnais, Illinois, and Olivia Syrcle of Starkville, Mississippi; 16 step great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Mildred, his brothers George, Lester, Floyd, Cliff, Leo, Merle and Reginald, and sisters Ruby, Beatrice and Elizabeth.
A lifelong resident of Pike County, Junior was a graduate of Barry High School and much of his life farmed part of the farm south of Barry on which he was raised. He was partner in a dairy with his brother for a few years before operating a feed store and trucking company in Barry prior to turning to farming full time. He is a past recipient of the Pike County Soil and Water District Conservation farmer of the year award for conservation efforts.
He served on the Barry school board and volunteer fire department, helped construct the baseball diamond at the high school, was a member of the Barry Saddle Club and provided land for its annual horse show for many years, and was a volunteer on numerous other community projects. He was a Barry Township Trustee for many years and served on the Pike County Board and on the Pike County Fair board.
Junior raised Tennessee Walking Horses for more than 40 years and was a founding member of the Illinois Walking Horse Association. He was a regular participant in horse shows throughout the region and showed at the Illinois State Fair for more than 30 years.
Visitation will be from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Thursday, March 17, 2016, at the Kirgan Funeral Home in Barry.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 18, 2016, at the Kirgan Funeral Home in Barry.
Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery in Barry.
