Mr James Richard ( Jim ) Megehe age 92 of New Canton, IL. passed away Fri. Feb. 3,2012 in Blessing Hospital, Quincy, IL. Jim was born on a winter day Dec. 15, 1919 in Whippoorwill Hollow near New Canton. He was the oldest of eight children born to Omer Hillard and Edna Marie ( Yelton ) Megehe. He was baptised at Union Church and at age twelve had his first job baling straw. He later worked for the contractor who paved Highway 96 through New Canton. In 1941 Jim was drafted into the Army and was sent to Fort Sill, Ok. where he trained in the artillery. He was then sent to Carins, Austrailia in 1942 and later to Burma and New Guinea where he was involved in the building of landing craft. He served in the Pacific Theater for two and a half years where he contracted Malaria and was sent back to the states for treatment. In 1944 he returned to New Canton and purchased one of the first commercial trucks available after the war. Jim hauled straw to the Quincy Straw Board. In 1947 he became interested in electrical work while helping a contractor who was wiring his parents restaurant. He joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in 1948 and was a member for over 50 years. He worked on several large projects in the area including Huck Finn Shopping Center and the Sears store in Quincy. His last big job was wiring the Dundee Cement Factory at Louisianna , Mo. in 1967. In the summer of 1945 he married Dale Maxine Callender in East St. Louis IL. They would later divorce. On Feb. 23, 1963 he married Dee Heilwagen in East St. Louis Il. she survives in Barry, IL. In 1970 Jim opened Jims T.V. in New Canton where he was a certified R.C.A. and Whirlpool dealer. He ran this business and did wiring and repair work even if he knew that the customer might not be able to pay him.He did this for 40 plus years. Also in 1970 the J & D Cafe opened next to his T.V. store and Jim and his wife Dee ran it until 1991. In the fall of 2000 the community that Jim loved honored him along with Dee as naming them to be Parade Marshalls of the New Canton Harvest Festival Jim is survived by a daughter Karla Long and her husband Larry of Lake St. Louis, Mo. a son Tyler Megehe and his wife Deborah of Cedar Park, Tx. two step daughters Judy Miller and her husband Jerry of Ursa, IL. as well as Karen Bernard and her husband Jim of New Canton, IL.. He has been blessed with six grand sons, Jeff and Joe Miller both of Ursa. Justin Bernard of New Canton, Darek Long of Eagan Minn., Erik Long of Brookfield, Wisc. and James Tyler Megehe of Cedar Park, Texas, three granddaughters Jill Miller of Pittsfield, IL., Anastacia Harnen of Houston, Tx., and Yvonne Howe of St. Peters, Mo. six great grandsons Jerod,Jacob,Connor,Jack, and T.J. Miller all of Ursa, Il. as well as Lane Bernard of Palmyra, Mo. Jim was preceded in death by brothers Virgil and Ronnie, sisters Ruth McNett and Polly Ogle. He was also preceded by a granddaughter Amanda Megehe and a great grandson Luke Miller. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m.Tuesday Feb. 7, in Kirgan Funeral Home, Barry. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday Feb. 8, in the funeral home. Miller all of Ursa, Il. as well as Lane Bernard of Palmyra, Mo. Four great granddaughters Ashley Weeks of Mendon, IL.,Amber Miller of Ursa, Madison Bernard of Quincy and Olivia Megehe of St. Peters, Mo. a great great grandson Landon Weeks of Mendon and a great great granddaughter Kaden Miller of Ursa. Also surviving are a brother Phillip Omer ( Bud ) Megehe of Petersburg, IL. and two sisters Doris Hoskins of Kinderhook, IL. and Elizabeth ( Libby ) Davis of Winchester, IL. Jim was preceded in death by brothers Virgil and Ronnie, sisters Ruth McNett and Polly Ogle. He was also preceded by a granddaughter Amanda Megehe and a great grandson Luke Miller. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m.Tuesday Feb. 7, in Kirgan Funeral Home, Barry. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday Feb. 8, in the funeral home. Burial will be in Shearer Cemetery, New Canton, IL. with Military rites by Barry American Legion post 222. Memorials are suggested to The Honor Flight Program. Funeral Home Website Kirganfh.com Mr James Richard ( Jim ) Megehe age 92 of New Canton, IL. passed away Fri. Feb. 3,2012 in Blessing Hospital, Quincy, IL. Jim was born on a winter day Dec. 15, 1919 in Whippoorwill Hollow near New Canton. He was the oldest of eight children born to Omer Hillard and Edna Marie ( Yelton ) Megehe. He was baptised at Union Church and at age twelve had his first job baling straw. He later worked for the contractor who paved Highway 96 through New Canton. In 1941 Jim was drafted into the Army and was sent to Fort Sill, Ok. where he trained in the artillery. He was then sent to Carins, Austrailia in 1942 and later to Burma and New Guinea where he was involved in the building of landing craft. He served in the Pacific Theater for two and a half years where he contracted Malaria and was sent back to the states for treatment. In 1944 he returned to New Canton and purchased one of the first commercial trucks available after the war. Jim hauled straw to the Quincy Straw Board. In 1947 he became interested in electrical work while helping a contractor who was wiring his parents restaurant. He joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in 1948 and was a member for over 50 years. He worked on several large projects in the area including Huck Finn Shopping Center and the Sears store in Quincy. His last big job was wiring the Dundee Cement Factory at Louisianna , Mo. in 1967. In the summer of 1945 he married Dale Maxine Callender in East St. Louis IL. They would later divorce. On Feb. 23, 1963 he married Dee Heilwagen in East St. Louis Il. she survives in Barry, IL. In 1970 Jim opened Jims T.V. in New Canton where he was a certified R.C.A. and Whirlpool dealer. He ran this business and did wiring and repair work even if he knew that the customer might not be able to pay him.He did this for 40 plus years. Also in 1970 the J & D Cafe opened next to his T.V. store and Jim and his wife Dee ran it until 1991. In the fall of 2000 the community that Jim loved honored him along with Dee as naming them to be Parade Marshalls of the New Canton Harvest Festival Jim is survived by a daughter Karla Long and her husband Larry of Lake St. Louis, Mo. a son Tyler Megehe and his wife Deborah of Cedar Park, Tx. two step daughters Judy Miller and her husband Jerry of Ursa, IL. as well as Karen Bernard and her husband Jim of New Canton, IL.. He has been blessed with six grand sons, Jeff and Joe Miller both of Ursa.
