Minnie Cathern (Moore) Hoyt, 95, of Barry, IL, formerly of Quincy, IL, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2024, at Barry Health Care & Senior Living in Barry.
She was born July 2, 1928, in Missouri, to Clarence & Ella Arlene (Brown) Moore.
She married Kenneth Leroy Hoyt on September 18, 1948, at the Barry United Methodist Church in Barry, IL. He preceded her in death on November 20, 2009.
She is survived by 1 daughter Janet (Hoyt) Main, of Barry, IL, son-in-law Ben Goda, of Hawaii, 5 grandchildren, Timothy (Michelle) Main, of Barry, IL, Lynette (Matt) Olwig, of St. Louis, MO, Brandon (Francis) Goda, of Hawaii, Taieya (Ka'a) Kihe, of Hawaii, and Bryson (Reiko) Goda, of Japan, and 6 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 1 daughter Linda Goda, 1 brother Cecil Moore and 1 sister Mildred Garber Thomas.
Cathern graduated from Barry High School in 1946. She graduated from Gem City Business College and upon graduation she was employed by cardiologist Dr. Pierce.
After she married Kenneth she helped on the farm. After moving from Hull to Barry Cathern raised 1,000 chickens and sold eggs wholesale in Hannibal. Approximately 1959 Cathern & Kenneth and her brother Cecil and his wife Shirley purchased the Illinois Cafe in Barry. By 1960 Kenneth & Cathern were sole owners for 11 years. Many children and teenagers grew up at the restaurant playing the jute box, dancing and playing the pinball machine. It was a gathering place on Saturday nights when the town was full and after ball games. They sold the restaurant in 1971. Cathern also worked at the Cremee and for 2 different CPA's in Pittsfield. Kenneth and Cathern moved to Quincy where they managed the Village apartments on 4th Street until they were sold. Cathern worked for Jamie Long at his laundromat for many years before retiring.
Visitation will be from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at the Kirgan Funeral Home in Barry.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at the Kirgan Funeral Home in Barry.
Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery in Barry.
Memorials are suggested to Park Lawn Cemetery or Kinderhook Cemetery.
