Obituary for Mrs. Wenona L. Merideth
Mrs. Wenona L. Merideth, 91, of Quincy, formerly of Barry and Liberty, entered into eternal peace at 9:27 a.m. Saturday, September 19, 2015, at Sunset Home in Quincy. She was born December 29, 1923, in Beverly Township, Adams County, Illinois, the daughter of Russell & Blanche J. (Predmore) Askew. They preceded her in death. She married John M. Merideth on April 8, 1945, in her parents home in Beverly, Illinois. He preceded her in death on September 30, 1995. She is survived by two sons, Darrell Merideth and his wife Connie, of Mesa, Arizona, Bruce Merideth and his wife Marla, of Mendon, Illinois and one daughter Suzanne Williams and her husband John, of Quincy, Illinois. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Scott Merideth and his wife Rebecca, of Cary, Illinois, Debbie Merideth-Zantout and her husband Jake, of Mesa, Arizona, Emily Hadsall and her husband Sam of St. Charles, Missouri, Celeste Mettemeyer of Liberty, Illinois, Amy Uppinghouse of Quincy, Illinois and one step granddaughter, Dorinda Smith of Quincy, Illinois. She is also survived by eight great grandchildren and 1 brother, Don Sylber Askew and his wife Leola of Quincy, Illinois. In addition to her husband and her parents she was preceded in death by one brother-in-law, Howard Vernon Merideth and one sister-in-law, Arlene Andrews and her husband Andy. Wenona was happy being a farm wife, tending to her family, home, garden and helping with farm chores. She enjoyed traveling with her husband around the United States. In later years she continued traveling with friends and family. Wenona was a dedicated 50+ year member of the First Baptist Church of Barry. She was active with the C.U.B. Sunday school class, Women's Baptist Association, helped with Bible School, and held the position of church treasurer for many years. She had strong Christian values and shared those with others in the community. Wenona loved school, many times volunteering to do extra studies. She was an avid reader and excelled in all of her classes. She graduated in 1941 as salutatorian in the first four year class of Liberty High School. After her family was grown, she was employed by the Farmers Bank of Liberty in February 1968 as a teller and was promoted in 1981 to the position of cashier. She retired in 1988. She was a previous member of Beverly HCE. Wenona had many friends throughout the local communities and will be remembered for her caring and compassionate personality by many people. Visitation will be from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 23, 2015, at the First Baptist Church of Barry, Barry, Illinois. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 23, 2015, at the First Baptist Church of Barry, Barry, Illinois. Burial will be in Mound Prairie Cemetery, Beverly, Illinois. Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church of Barry. Kirgan Funeral Home in Barry is in charge of arrangements.
